to be honest i've wanted to share about our second house build for quite some time. i've been feeling like it's time to take this little blog in another direction, like including more than just our family life. not to say that i won't post about us or our littles anymore. it's just not going to be the only thing i post about. 2014 marks the year that i'm going to start chronicling our journey of how we're making the house we built, into a home for our family. we've been in our house for a year now and although it does feel like home, we want to be able to have our home reflect who we are and be absolutely in love with it. something that doesn't really happen when it's freshly built.
we started the process of looking for a new family home way before i was even pregnant with averie. we always knew that we'd move up into a larger home (our first was a two bedroom) and wanted to see what was out there. we looked at properties outside the city, and quite a few within the area we were currently living. every time we saw a house our reactions to it were pretty consistent "we like the blank, but need to do blank, blank, blank and blank." now i'm the one who is not opposed to doing renos. truth be told i would've loved knocking down walls, re-doing bathrooms, etc. but rob is the more sensible/money conscious type. why would we pay a lot of money for a house that wasn't perfect and then put even more into it and still have it not measure up. so we left our search on the back burner for the time being. a couple months later we started looking a the possibility of building a house again, we had built our first one and it was a pretty positive experience.
so we started browsing the developments that were in areas we'd like to raise our family, still wasn't pregnant with averie and liam was just over a year old. i had also started back at work after being off for a year on maternity leave. rob had found a really cool eco-based development near where we were currently living. although the premise what great, we quickly realized that perhaps it wasn't really what we were looking for. not sure we'd fit in with our four cars (yes we have a small fleet, that's what happens when you marry a car buff) or with our eventual hot tub. lucky for us there was another non-eco development just on the other side. and they had beautiful lots to choose from. tons of mature trees, aspen forests and ponds full of wildlife. it was technically still in the city, literally right on the edge, but it felt like it was more in a forest. exactly what we were looking for. and with that we found a house plan that we fell in love with and jumped in with both feet in october 2011. during our build, our timeline became a little hairy. when we found out we were pregnant we didn't really think it would impact our move into the new house. man we were totally wrong. our possession date was the same day averie was due. now what? we were never worried about selling the house we were currently living in, knew it would sell quickly. it sold in less than 24 hours and with all our conditions. boo-ya. but we still had to figure out what we would do if we were moving into our new house and i went into labour. needless to say, i think averie knew we were moving so she decided to cook for a week longer. by that time we were sort of settled in. still in boxes, but there were beds set up and the kitchen was unpacked.
so there it is. a little bit about how it is we came to build and move into our second house. we love where we live. we love that we have a forest for a backyard instead of having another house right behind us. we love our neighbourhood and neighbours. looking forward to all the future block parties to come. and now i'm really looking forward to sharing our journey of making our house into our home.
